Smiling dental professional consulting a patient, at Dallas Oral Surgery Associates. Oral surgery specializes in diagnosing and treating injuries, diseases, and defects on the jaw, face, and maxillofacial area. This specialty is unique and requires a qualification in medicine and dentistry, accompanied by general and specialist surgical training. Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) carries a range of procedures on an outpatient basis under conscious sedation, but significant operations will require inpatient treatment under general anesthetic. We help you understand what happens in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Complex Tooth Extractions

Tooth extraction is the most common procedure your dentist will recommend if you have impacted wisdom teeth, dental trauma, gum disease, or severe decay. To save the surrounding teeth, your dental surgeon will cut through the tissues and bones using specialized instruments to access and remove the impacted tooth. Afterward, they will clean and disinfect the socket, followed by a bone graft to prevent bone loss before stitching.

Bone Grafting

Natural teeth stimulate your nerves to send nutrients to the jaw for good health. However, suppose you lose a tooth and it stays missing for some time. In that case, you will experience bone deterioration, necessitating a bone graft to restore the density and volume of your jawbones.

During a bone graft, your surgeon will create an incision in your gums to make the jawbone visible. Next, they will clean and disinfect the area and add bone grafting material to fix the defect. Finally, they will reposition your gum tissue and close the incision with stitches.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective jaw surgery is advisable to reduce pain caused by TMJ, improve chewing, and correct facial imbalances and misalignment. During this procedure, your OMS will cut parts of your jaw to create removable bone fragments that they can reposition to form a straight jaw.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeries deal with injuries, diseases, and defects on the face, mouth, and jaw through the above procedures. Therefore, if you suspect that you have any condition requiring intervention by an OMS, contact us today to schedule your appointment.
