Does Jaw Bone Regrow After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Posted on 5/15/2024 by Dallas Oral Surgery Associates - Dallas
Unfortunately, your jawbone cannot regenerate or regrow on its own. If there are empty sockets at any point of your jawbone, bone loss is inevitable. As you continue losing bone mass on your jawbone, you will begin to notice changes in your teeth and in your physical appearance. For instance, a significant loss of bone mass in the jawbone can cause the jawbone to collapse. A jawbone, without much bone mass, cannot hold the remaining teeth as properly as expected.

Unless you seek the help of a dentist, your jawbone has no way of regrowing on its own. Your dentist can employ different methods to help your jawbone regain its strength, including bone graft procedures and tissue-stimulating proteins that will promote jawbone regrowth in the specific areas where bone has been lost.

What Happens After Wisdom Teeth Removal?

History indicates that humans needed wisdom teeth when they had to chew harder foods, like raw meat and raw plants. However, the discovery of fire has made the use of the third molars redundant.

Wisdom teeth extraction is sometimes inevitable, just like the effects that often follow after extracting your wisdom teeth. When you remove any of your teeth, you will be left with an empty socket in the alveolar ridge bone. Often, the empty socket heals on its own, but the width and height of the bone there will start to deteriorate after extraction.

When you extract a tooth from its roots, your jawbone begins to deteriorate because there are no more roots that stimulate the cells to deliver nutrients to the jawbone. The jawbone does not have the means to strengthen itself, so it continues to shrink as long as the socket remains empty.

Preventing Jawbone Loss

You can always take measures to prevent the loss of jawbone mass after having your wisdom teeth extracted. Your dentist will remove the tooth and fill the empty socket with bone or bone substitutes. The socket is then covered with tissue-stimulating proteins to help your body naturally repair the socket. These procedures will help your jawbone regenerate while preventing further jawbone loss.
