Can I Get Oral Surgery While on Accutane?

Posted on 6/15/2024 by Dallas Oral Surgery Associates - Dallas
A man in dental chair ready for oral surgeryAccutane is another name for Isotretinoin, a type of medication prescribed for severe acne. Accutane is an effective treatment for severe acne, but it is known to have adverse side effects on the users. Some of the known side effects of this medication include the potential swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. These side effects can cause unforeseen problems during an oral surgery, such as causing an adverse reaction to sedation.

It is not recommended to get oral surgery while on Accutane because you risk developing a dry socket, especially if the surgery entails the extraction of your wisdom teeth. There are also unconfirmed cases where Accutane has been associated with negative effects on wound healing after surgical extraction of the teeth. Currently, the data on the negative effects of Accutane on wound healing are conflicting, with a significant portion of this data leaning toward the potential for adverse effects on wound healing.

A randomized controlled trial determined that 2 out of 3 patients who underwent oral surgery and had stopped using Accutane for two days before surgery recovered normally. The other patient did not stop Accutane medication before oral surgery, and they reported that their wounds healed much slower.

Standard Recommendation on Getting Oral Surgery while on Accutane

For more than two decades now, dentists have continued to uphold the standard recommendation that it is unsafe to perform oral surgery procedures on patients who have recently completed systemic therapy with Accutane. The same recommendation applies to patients currently receiving Accutane and who need an oral surgery procedure.

In addition to affecting the healing of wounds after surgery, Accutane has also been associated with hypertrophic scarring. Some patients have also reportedly noticed keloid formation, hence the need to avoid any oral surgery while on Accutane.

While there may be conflicting information about the safety of oral surgery for patients using Accutane, our primary concern is your safety. It is always better to err on the side of caution and prioritize your well-being.
