Benefits of Dental Implants
Dallas, TX

Reversing these frustrations, however, is well worth the time and cost. At Dallas Oral Surgery Associates, we offer dental implants as an effective solution to replacing missing teeth. When fully healed, dental implants provide the same functions and appearance as natural teeth.

Health Problems Associated With Tooth Loss

Oral health issues and neglect are common culprits of tooth loss. Many other factors such as tooth decay, gum disease, genetics, and the use of certain medications can also lead to losing teeth.

It is crucial to replace missing teeth, especially to prevent further tooth loss. The strength of the jawbone relies on frequent stimulation from the tooth roots when chewing. In the absence of stimulation, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate from a lack of use. When one tooth is lost, the site of the underlying jawbone will begin to weaken and atrophy, placing neighboring teeth at risk of being damaged or falling out from a lack of support.

Traditional dentures are a more common form of tooth replacement, but there are several downsides to relying on traditional dentures over dental implants: dentures are prone to shifting or coming loose, they do not address bone loss, and they must be removed periodically. Dental bridges will also fail to provide much-needed stimulation. Dental implants, however, are able to provide the constant stimulation the jawbone needs to maintain strength.

Structure And Function Of Dental Implants

Dental implants consist of a metal screw, a ceramic crown, and an abutment that connects the two. The titanium post is surgically inserted into the jawbone to serve as the root of a tooth, while the crown imitates the surface and function of a natural tooth.

The metal in a dental implant screw is typically titanium or a similar biocompatible substance, meaning the body can bond to the substance without the likelihood of rejecting it. The jawbone will bond and fuse to the metal screw in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant site has healed, the underlying jaw will be able to receive necessary stimulation, maintaining the health, development, and density of the jawbone.
