Cone BeamAt Dallas Oral Surgery Associates, customer comfort is one of our biggest concerns. That’s why offer cutting-edge technology such as 3D cone beam imaging. Technology that allows for high-quality, low-stress treatment is often expensive, but we’re convinced that we’re the ones who should pay more for your satisfaction, not you. What is 3D Cone Beam Imaging?3D cone beam imaging gets its name from the x-ray beam used in the scan, which is in the shape of a cone. CT scans, on the other hand, have x-ray beams that are fan-shaped. The cone beam takes nearly 600 shots of your mouth, which are then turned into a 3D image of your mouth via specialized software. This technology allows us to view precise, 3D images of your teeth, bones, and gums. What Advantages does 3D Cone Beam Imaging offer? These 3D images have several advantages over 2D CT scans. Since we can move the images around to see your tooth and bone structures from multiple angles, this makes all of our surgical procedures much more accurate. For example, we’re able to see better how close a wisdom tooth is to arteries and nerves in the jaw (and thus gauge whether and how to extract it). We can also see just how much bone is available to support a dental implant (and therefore make the call on whether or not to do a bone graft). Cone beam imaging also helps us make treatment plans for tooth extractions (particularly for impacted teeth), aids in the placement of dental implants, and allows us to determine whether or not performing a root canal is a good idea. We also use these 3D images to diagnose and examine TMJ disorders, fractures, sleep apnea, sinuses, and other problems. Is 3D Cone Beam Imaging used in every Procedure?Despite their accuracy and multiple uses, 3D cone beam imaging ultimately cannot replace traditional 2D x-rays. Moreover, we use 3D cone beams as a diagnostic tool when it’s medically necessary, not on every single patient. Is it Painful to receive a 3D Cone Beam Scan?We take special care to ensure minimal radiation exposure since that is a concern for many people. The images we’re trying to acquire will determine how much radiation the cone beam scan emits, but rest assured that we check the machine daily and weekly to make sure it’s running the way it should. If you need a 3D cone beam scan, the process is easy and takes a minute. Other than removing any metal jewelry to ensure the quality of the image, there is no preparation or discomfort involved. The machine moves instead of you, rotating 360 degrees to get information from every angle. Our team will analyze the image to glean the information necessary to put together the best treatment plan possible for you. If you have any questions or concerns, whether about radiation, cost or anything else, please bring them to our attention prior to the scan.
