General Anesthesia

Close up of dental anestheticAt Dallas Oral Surgery Associates, we perform a range of oral surgery procedures, including wisdom tooth extractions, dental implant placement, and jaw surgery. We care about your oral health and your own confidence in your smile, but we understand that oral surgical procedures can seem daunting.

Routine, biannual dental visits are an important part of maintaining your oral health, as they allow your dentists to screen your mouth for tooth decay and oral diseases. These visits often include the removal of plaque and tartar buildup from the teeth. For many patients, even routine cleaning visits can be a source of fear or anxiety. Some patients may even have dental or medical phobias that prevent them from receiving proper routine oral care.

If the thought of visiting a dental office makes you nervous or uncomfortable, you are not alone. We offer general anesthesia for those surgical procedures where it is necessary, but we also provide general anesthesia as a means to alleviate anxiety and provide you with a comfortable patient experience.

What Is General Anesthesia?

General anesthesia is the strongest and most serious form of sedation available. For these reasons and more, general anesthesia is reserved for the most complicated and lengthy procedures. Our team may recommend general anesthesia for wisdom tooth extractions, dental implant placement, and other oral surgeries.

Before any oral surgery procedure, we will examine your medical history and determine if you are eligible to receive general anesthesia. This screening may include disclosing any medications you may be taking routinely, any preexisting conditions, and other relevant oral or overall health information. This may include reaching out to your primary care provider for further information or examinations.

For your procedure, you will be completely unconscious due to general anesthesia. During this time, you will not feel any pain. Our anesthesia team steadily administers this sedative directly into the vein to maintain a state of controlled unconsciousness, keeping you asleep for the entirety of the procedure. For some patients, this sedative can also be administered through a face mask or in conjunction with nitrous oxide. General anesthetic involves the additional use of local anesthetic in almost every case. This local anesthetic will numb the mouth and temporarily eliminate any pain or discomfort during and after the procedure.

Once the procedure is complete, you will need time to wake up and recover from sedation before leaving the office. All forms of sedation will require you to arrange a ride to and from our office. Do not operate any vehicle or heavy machinery for 24 hours after receiving general anesthesia. Be sure to clear your schedule, as you will feel groggy or sleepy for the remainder of the day.

If you are in need of any oral surgery procedure requiring general anesthesia, you can be confident that our on-site anesthesia team will provide you with exceptional care. For any questions regarding general anesthesia or any other dental needs, feel free to give us a call at 214-363-9946.
