When To Receive a Single Tooth Implant
A single-tooth dental implant is primarily used to replace a missing tooth. This implant is surgically inserted into the jawbone with a titanium screw. Once the implant is firmly attached and integrated into the bone, the single-tooth implant can begin functioning as a new, natural tooth.
The best candidates for a single-tooth dental implant are patients with adequate bone support and stronger jawbones. However, patients with limited bone structure can receive additional support from bone grafting. Patients with preexisting conditions such as diabetes, liver diseases, or blood disorders may not be suitable for this procedure.
Surgical Process
A single-tooth dental implant consists of the implant, the abutment, and the crown. The entire process from the consultation, the day of surgery, and recovery may take weeks to months, but the final result provides patients with a replacement tooth that is functionally and aesthetically identical to a real tooth. The surgical process of installing an implant requires local anesthesia for patients. First, an incision is made in the gums to expose the jawbone and implant site. In order to attach the metal implant, a hole is created in the jaw bone. This process typically leaves gaps in some areas of the bone; a temporary denture may be provided to properly fill gaps and guide proper jaw motion and teeth alignment. Before an implant abutment can be placed, a healing cap is placed to help gum tissue around the implant site heal properly. At this time, a temporary crown is placed over the healing cap to replicate the artificial tooth during the healing process.
Once the surrounding tissue has adequately healed and the healing cap is removed, the abutment is placed in the dental implant. This abutment is the connecting piece that allows the artificial tooth to be connected to the implant fixture.
This new artificial tooth must be treated and cared for with regular brushing and flossing. Routine checkups may also be necessary to monitor the healing process. Some steps within the surgical process may also be modified depending on the patient.
Factors Affecting Treatment
Bone density, available bone space, bone width, and ridge mapping are some of many factors that may affect treatment. During the initial consultation, both oral and overall health of patients is evaluated, as both affect the success rate and outcomes of a single-tooth dental implant. The success rate and duration of healing depend on the patient’s bone density, oral care habits, and several other factors.
